The LUNGS program

Nurse-led clinic screening

The Learning Under Nurse Guidance and Screening (LUNGS) Program was developed to help increase screening and subsequent diagnosis of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) in general practice. The program is set up so that a LUNGS nurse visits a participating clinic and works with the practice nurse(s) to run and implement COPD screening. This is done by identifying and reaching out to patients at risk of COPD and also promoting the screening sessions in the surgery, so patients can elect to sign up if they meet specific criteria.
